About the event

Premiere Stages will host a workshop lead by one or more of the participating playwrights from the Premiere Stages Play Festival Reading Series. Open to high school students, the workshop will focus on the craft of playwriting, specifically creating a new work for the stage. Students who attend are encouraged to return on March 18th to participate in the readings and the interactive Q & A's with the playwrights. In addition, participating students will be offered free admission for the play selected from the readings for a full Equity production in July and a backstage tour. In this way, they will experience the entire process of developing a play from initial reading to full production.

The productions are:

Thursday, March 15th at 7:30pm
Alexandria by Alex Lewin

For three generations the Qasim family has successfully run a coffee house on the Corniche, Alexandria’s Mediterranean boulevard. When a man from America offers to buy their lease, the family must confront a fateful choice: sell to the Starbucks Corp. of America, or refuse and take their chances when Egypt’s first Starbucks opens up across the street. All this is set against the strife of Egypt’s 2005 presidential election, setting the stage for the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

Friday, March 16th at 7:30 pm
Cocktail Time in Havana by Rogelio Martinez

Michael, a struggling American journalist, embarks on a journey to Cuba to interview the reclusive Fidel Castro. Instead he finds himself intoxicated by a timeless world of romance and political intrigue, where nothing is what it seems.

Saturday, March 17th at 7:30 pm
Tamarack House by Michael Dowling

A compelling group of discarded misfits, caught in the whirlpool of a fleeting American dream, struggle to hold onto the stately boarding house that defines them.

Sunday, March 18th at 5pm
Handicapped People in Their Formal Attire by Kathryn Grant

In 1968, members of the Delaware Association for the Handicapped kick up their heels with a black tie fundraiser to honor quadriplegic, Agnes Sheehan, who is escorted by her able-bodied cousin, Theresa. As the tensions of the era erupt outside, a lifetime of pent-up resentment is unleashed between the two women as they confront the true meaning of sacrifice.
