About the event

A "relaxed performance" is one that has been adapted to provide a relaxed and safe
environment for individuals with autism, learning differences, or other sensory and
communication needs so that they and their families may enjoy live theater together. The
quality of the production still aligns with McCarter's high artistic standards, but small
adjustments are made to certain technical elements (such as sound and light cues). In
addition, at a relaxed performance, professional staff members from our partner
organizations are on hand to assist parents and caregivers, a family restroom is available,
and there are be designated activity and relaxation areas in the lobby.
A “Relaxed Performance” is a new term in the U.S., though it is very commonly used in the
U.K. You may have heard of “Autism-friendly,” or “Sensory-friendly” performances. McCarter
uses the term “Relaxed Performance” because we feel it is the most inclusive of children and
families with a wide range of sensory, learning, and communication differences, including, but
not exclusively accessible to individuals on the Autism spectrum.
McCarter has developed these events in partnership with Eden Autism Services, ARC
Mercer, the TDF Autism Initiative, and Autism Friendly Spaces, who all have graciously lent
their expertise to ensure these special performances are positive experiences for all involved.
