New Plays New Jersey -Centenary Stage Darrah Cloud's Turning
@ Bickford Theatre
Thursday, March 8, 2018 7pm

Part of the week-long staged reading series of New Works by New Jersey Playwrights, presented by the New Jersey Theatre's that support them. This evening, a new play from Centenary Stage.

Former Hackettstown, NJ resident Ada Lunardoni had an illustrious claim to fame that was little known to her neighbors - she was a member of the first US Women's Gymnastics Team that had its genesis in the backyards and Turners Gyms of Newark, then going on to cross the Atlantic Ocean with Jesse Owens to compete in the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Turning dramatizes the experience of the young women from New Jersey who competed in the inaugural women’s gymnastics (“turning”) Olympic event in Berlin, in 1936—the first year that women’s gymnastics ws included in the Olympics, and the first time that world-class gymnastics coaches had to coach women. At the time, women’s turning was considered a taboo sport, and many of the team members had to rise above resistance from their fathers, husbands, and others.

This play is commissioned by Centenary Stage Company, in collaboration with the NJPAC Stage Exchange, a partnership of NJPAC and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.
